The Bell

Inspired by the novel The Bell, in which the discovery of a large bell submerged deep in a river sets the story in motion, this project translates the essence of the book into an object. The novel's final sentence is etched onto a metal plate using the traditional etching process, in which the surface is physically corroded to reveal the text. When the cabinet is opened, the engraved fragments align to reveal the final sentence, echoing the way the clues surrounding the bell come together toward the end of the novel.
